Congratulations are in order for the one and only Missy Elliott who just secured the bag, okay!? She received her honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music May 11th!! Did y’all know that she is thee FIRST female rapper to receive the degree!?
Other creatives to hold this degree are Aretha Franklin, BB King, Smokey Robinson and Loretta Lynn. This has been a helluva year for Missy. As many of you may know, she was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in January! Congratulations, Missy!!
During her speech, she told graduates, “There will be ups and downs — prepare for that. As long as you are breathing, it is never too late. Don’t forget that. You have come too far to quit.”
As you guys can imagine, Missy Elliott was excited about most recent accomplishment, and you can bet she shared her celebratory mood with her supporters and fans on the internet. Se uploaded a video to Instagram, holding her degree, hitting a slight two step to Ann Nesby’s “As Long as You Keep Your Head to the Sky.” She captioned the video, “Create your own lane!!!!!! Sincerely Dr. Missy Elliott #VA #757”
Along side Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake and grammy-winning composer Alex Lacamoire also claimed their honorary doctorates from Berklee’s School of Music.
