<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">As more visibility and recognition is placed on LGBTQ+ rights and issues, new evidence suggests that a growing number of young Americans now identify as part of the community. Based on the results of a new national survey, 5% of Americans under the age of 30 formally identify as <a href="https://dev.theshaderoom.com/carolina-panthers-make-history-by-hiring-first-openly-transgender-cheerleader/">transgender or non-binary</a>.</p>
<p>@Forbes reports, a <u><a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/windriver/2022/06/01/open-source-innovating-at-the-intelligent-edge/?utm_campaign=forbes&;utm_source=twitter&;utm_medium=social&;utm_term=Gordie&;sh=4bae379974a4">recent survey</a></u> from the Pew Research Center revealed that a growing segment of young Americans identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. An estimated 5% of Americans ages 18 to 29 identify as transgender or non-binary, which is the highest number of any other age group. That 5% breaks down to around 2% of survey participants saying they are transgender and 3% confirming they are non-binary.</p>
<p>That number among those under 30 is much higher than survey participants who are older. Among Americans 30 to 45, only 1.6% identify as transgender or non-binary, while only 0.3% of those ages 50 and up identify the same way. Additionally, the number of participants of all ages who say they are transgender was 0.6% and 1% for those who say they are non-binary. The Pew survey was conducted from May 16th to May 22nd with 10,000 people questioned.</p>
<p>There were also findings that revealed that 44% of participants stated that they knew someone personally who is transgender—which is up from 37% back in 2017. Meanwhile, 20% say they know someone who is non-binary.</p>
<p>Generation Z appears to be leading the way with updated gender/sexual identification, as 15.9% say they are part of the LGBTQ+ community and 72% identify as bisexual.</p>
