Netflix is testing out a new system to crack down on primary account holders sharing their accounts with users outside of their households to address illicit password-sharing. According to Variety, the test launching will make primary account holders pay an additional fee!

If you aren’t familiar with Netflix’s terms of service, a customer’s account “May not be shared with individuals beyond your household.” Now, Netflix has been letting folks slide for years with password sharing, but reports show the company has been testing this system since last year. The company ran limited tests prompting users to enter their account credentials as a way to nudge non account holders to pay for their own accounts.

The upcoming test will launch in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. Netflix’s Director of Product Innovation, Chengyi Long, said the company would allow members to share accounts easily and securely. While also paying a bit more. Subscribers in those countries can expect to see the new options available in the next few weeks. However, they might not expand beyond those markets.

Chengyi also wrote a statement explaining, “We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans.” She added, “While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

In addition, the ‘add an extra member’ feature will allow members with Netflix’s Standard and Premium plans to add subsidiary accounts for up to two people not in their home. Those additional people can still have their own profile, personalized recommendations, login, and password. This will be less than the cost of a separate Netflix plan. Although reports don’t state if this testing will be coming to the United States Roommates, how do you feel about the changes?
