Nigeria Bans Twitter After Social Media Platform Deletes President Buhari’s Tweet

On Friday, the Nigerian government released a statement announcing its ban of Twitter.

In a statement posted by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, it read, “The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.”

The platform was accused of allowing “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

This announcement comes just two days after Twitter deleted a tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari deemed as offensive, according to @cnn.

It is reported that the Nigerian leader used Twitter to threaten people he believes are responsible for repeatedly attacking the public infrastructure in the region.

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand,” the now-deleted tweet read.

According to @cnn, his message referred to the “brutal two-year Nigeria-Biafra war, which killed an estimated one to three million people, mostly from the Igbo tribe in the eastern part of the country between 1967-1970.”

There wasn’t any official word on when the ban would start.

According to BBC, Twitter stated they were “investigating and will provide updates when we know more” as it relates to the Nigerian ban, and the announcement was “deeply concerning.”

As you know, in 2020, Nigerians used Twitter and created the trending hashtag #EndSARS.

It was used as Young Nigerians protested police brutality and social profiling.
