Chance The Rapper tugged on the strings of a lot of hearts after he donated $1 million to the Chicago Public School Foundation Monday.
Not too long prior to his generous donation, Chance was seen coming out of a meeting with the Governor of Illinois–a meeting he walked into in search of answers about the fate of Chicago’s public school system and its $215 million budget shortage. By the sounds of his post-meeting statements, he wasn’t too pleased with the way things went with governor Rauner so it’s wonderful to see him taking matters into his own hands.
Some critics have questioned his motive, but he expressed how genuine he is before donating the million dollar check: “This isn’t about politics, this isn’t about posturing. This is about taking care of the kids.”
He presented the donation at Wescott Elementary School. The school’s principal, Monique Dockery says that $10,000 of the money will be allocated specifically to the school to go toward their Academic After School and Enrichment programs which were cut after the school system was faced with a budget freeze. The remainder of the money will toward the budget shortage.
Complex reports that the money was raised with the help of LiveNation, AEG Live, and a few different venues and independent promoters. It truly takes a village.
“Everybody and their momma knows about what’s going on in Chicago, it’s constantly talked about,” He said. “But we’re about to enhance the conversation.”
We are excited to see Chance’s next steps, as well as what other artists take action in their communities as a ripple effect!
