Popular rideshare company Uber has once again found itself in the middle of serious legal drama and this time hundreds of women are taking the company to court. According to recent reports, more than 500 female passengers have filed an official lawsuit against Uber due to multiple claims of sexual assault.

@TheHill reports, represented by San Francisco-based law firm Slater Slater Schulman, over 500 women have come together to file a formal lawsuit against Uber, citing allegations that they were “kidnapped, falsely imprisoned, stalked, harassed and raped,” among other incidents, by contracted drivers registered on the rideshare platform. The lawsuit further alleges that Uber was well aware of the severity of the reported incidents of misconduct since 2014, but did nothing to intervene.

Adam Slater, one of the attorneys in the case released a statement regarding the lawsuit against Uber and stated that the company was “slow and inadequate” and could have done more to address the sexual assault claims. “While the company has acknowledged this crisis of sexual assault in recent years, its actual response has been slow and inadequate, with horrific consequences,” he said.

Slater continued, slamming Uber and highlighting what the company could do to further ensure the safety of passengers. “There is so much more that Uber can be doing to protect riders: adding cameras to deter assaults, performing more robust background checks on drivers, creating a warning system when drivers don’t stay on a path to a destination,” he stated.

Following the official filing of the lawsuit, a spokesperson for Uber noted that the company makes efforts to ensure that all reports of sexual assault are taken “seriously.”

Additionally, the Uber rep said, “There is nothing more important than safety, which is why Uber has built new safety features, established survivor-centric policies, and been more transparent about serious incidents. While we can’t comment on pending litigation, we will continue to keep safety at the heart of our work.”
