Pusha T is very passionate about mass incarceration and he has been taking steps to try and end it altogether.
It turns out that after the rapper watched Ava DuVernay’s “13” documentary, which connects the dots between slavery and the prison system, he began to really understand that there is a system that works against blacks and latinos.
“When you get the knowledge that Ive come across recently, its like, oh my god, he says. You want to tell kids the truth.
Pusha T continued to explain that the more he learns, the more he realizes that he had been deceived into a different way of thinking as a mischievous teen.
“I dont like feeling like Ive been taken advantage of, like youre preying on my lack of knowledge,” he told Complex. “Had I been looking at it from that perspective, I might not have made some of the choices [I made]. We might not have made those choices.
So, what exactly does Pusha T plan to do about the plight of mass incarceration?
Well, he made strides this year when he endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Some thought it was weird that he backed her since she supported the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which helped increase the prison population back in the 90’s. However, the rapper thought that her willingness to apologize meant to him, that she was open to fixing the problem too.
“I do think she cares about mass incarceration, he told Complex ahead of the election. Now, why she cares versus why I care, that could be different. I dont really have time to deal in that. I like the fact that we both care about something and, together, if we can fix it, that would be amazing.
Unfortunately, Clinton lost the race, but that doesn’t mean that Pusha T will stop fighting to end mass incarceration. “Im going to continue to fight up until Inauguration Day, then we have to strategize a bit better with regard to how and what were going to do going forward,” he says.
“Its truly going to be tough and everyone knows that. There has to be a new strategy because were not dealing with people who actually care about our people.”
