<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">TSR Health: If you want to lose weight but don’t want to go under the knife, then there may be a weight loss tool for you on the way.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A group of researchers from New Zealand and the UK have developed a weight loss device that prevents users from eating solid food by locking their jaws shut.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Named the </span><a href="https://www.otago.ac.nz/news/news/releases/otago830110.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dentalslim Diet Control</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, the device uses magnets to restrict the jaw from opening by more than 2 millimeters, while still allowing users to breathe normally, <a href="https://www.insider.com/weight-loss-device-uses-magnets-to-lock-jaw-restict-eating-2021-6">Insider</a> reports. The device includes an emergency release mechanism in case of choking or a panic attack. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The whole point of the design is to make sure patients stick to a liquid diet, according to lead researcher Paul Brunton of the University of Otago.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;The main barrier for people for successful weight loss is compliance and this helps them establish new habits,&#8221; Brunton said in a </span><a href="https://www.otago.ac.nz/news/news/releases/otago830110.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">press release</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To prove that this bad boy works, the device was tested on seven healthy volunteers with obesity who followed a liquid diet that restricted them to 1,200 calories a day. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The participants lost an average of 14 pounds in the two-week study, which was published a few days ago in the </span><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41415-021-3081-1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">British Dental Journal</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The participants reported they were satisfied with the results they got and were motivated to continue. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are some things on the downside that are worth noting. The participants also had trouble speaking, felt uncomfortable, tense, and embarrassed, and generally felt their quality of life was worse, the researchers wrote. </span></p>
