By now we all know one of the biggest stories in hip-hop this week is the shooting that took place at Irving Plaza in NYC, which left one dead and three injured. One of those injured was Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave, and it was later learned that he was one of the shooters inside of the concert venue.
Following Wednesday’s disaster NYC Police Commissioner, William Bratton commented on the incident and referred to rappers as, “rap artists who are basically thugs that basically celebrate the violence.”
However, D.M.C, one-third of the legendary rap group Run-DMC was not here for Bratton’s comments. In fact he feels like Bratton should apologize to rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, Will Smith and Chuck D, who do not embody the commissioner’s comments.
He said, “He needs to apologize to all the rappers who have come from the streets but have never put out anything negative and disrespectful to break down … and destroy their community.”
He continued, “Him as the commissioner saying it did so much damage and pushes hip-hop back, that’s why he should apologize.”
NYC Major Bill de Blasio said that Bratton was only talking out of frustration.
Bratton’s full comment was, “The crazy world of the so-called rap artists who are basically thugs that basically celebrate the violence they’ve lived all their lives and unfortunately that violence often manifests itself during the performances and that’s exactly what happened last evening.”
