Roommates, although the NBA is gearing up for its official return later this month—one of its star players has just announced he has coronavirus. Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook recently confirmed that he has tested positive for COVID-19 in a written post on social media.
Russell Westbrook made the announcement that just before his team the Houston Rockets departed for the Walt Disney World NBA campus in Orlando, Florida, he tested positive for coronavirus.
The NBA announced coronavirus test results earlier today and of the 322 players tested since arriving in the Orlando bubble, only two have tested positive so far and have left the NBA campus to isolate at home or in isolation housing. However, since July 1st, the NBA revealed that a total of 19 players have tested positive for the virus.
Russell Westbrook posted the following message confirming his test results:
“I tested positive for COVID-19 prior to my teams departure to Orlando. I’m currently feeling well, quarantined and looking forward to rejoining my teammates when I am cleared. Thank you all for the well wishes and continued support. Please take this virus seriously. Be safe. Mask up! #whynot”
Coach Mike D’Antoni previously said he hoped all three of his affected players would be able to arrive at the NBA bubble in Disney World within the next three or four days. The Rockets had declined to specify a reason for the players’ absence. The infected players will have to quarantine in their rooms for 48 hours after their arrival before practicing with the Rockets.
D’Antoni said the three players were working out “at their home bases,” and he expressed optimism that their delayed arrivals wouldn’t have a significant impact on the Rockets, particularly once the playoffs begin.
