The trial of Tekashi 6ix9ine hasn’t even reached its final conclusion and there have already been multiple rumors swirling about movies and TV shows surrounding the case. Well, one network has beat everyone to the punch and it happens to be premium cable outlet Showtime—and they have just ordered a forthcoming limited series about the whole ordeal.
According to @Deadline, Showtime Documentary Films has officially green lit the Tekashi 6ix9ine limited docuseries, “Supervillain,” which profiles the rapper and his current legal troubles as well as his initial rise to fame. The project is said to be inspired by a feature in Rolling Stone by journalist Stephen Witt, whose piece was titled “Tekashi 6ix9ine: The Rise and Fall of a Hip Hop Supervillain.”
The in-depth three-part series is set to document how Daniel Hernandez transformed himself from a New York City deli clerk into Tekashi 6ix9ine, the tattooed hip hop artist of the Generation Z era, amassing 2.6 billion streams and 15 hits on the Billboard charts in just a few short years. The project is co-produced by Imagine Documentaries, Rolling Stone and Lightbox.
As he quickly gained fans, he also gained enemies, and those consequences proved to be detrimental. He was blacklisted by media outlets, canceled by the music industry, shot at, kidnapped and arrested—and “Supervillain” will provide viewers with a unfiltered look into Tekashi 6ix9ine’s epic rise and fall from those closest to him.
Speaking about the limited series, Vinnie Malhotra, EVP, Nonfiction Programming, Showtime Networks, had this to say:
“The bizarre and complicated rise of Tekashi 6six9ine is a story of our times. Beyond becoming one of the most notorious hip hop artists of this generation, his story speaks volumes of the impact of social media and manufactured celebrity in our society. We’re excited to be partnering with such heavy hitters in the world of music and documentary to bring ‘Supervillain’ to life.”
Imagine Documentaries President, Justin Wilkes, also added his take on the motivation behind the series:
“Tekashi’s story has haunted us since we first read Stephen Witt’s brilliant article in Rolling Stone. It’s a tale that’s emblematic of our times and we’re honored to be partnered with Showtime, Rolling Stone along with the fantastic filmmaking team at Lightbox in bringing it to life.”
Currently, there is no word on a release date, but it’s likely that they are probably waiting for Tekashi’s final sentencing to premiere it on the network, so that the story is complete.
