Roommates, Trump sat down for a recent interview and when the subject of the late Civil Rights icon John Lewis came upit appears that he may have suffered from brief memory loss. He claimed he didnt know him, while also being salty that Lewis didnt attended his very scarce inauguration back in January 2017.
During a sit-down interview with the HBO series Axios, Trump was asked about a variety of current issues, including his lack of response to COVID-19. However, his most jaw-dropping comments were those about John Lewis.
When asked, John Lewis is lying in state in the U.S. Capitol, how do you think history will remember John Lewis? Trump responded with the following:
I dont know. I really dont know. I dont know. I dont know John Lewis. He chose not to come to my inauguration. He choseI dontI never met John Lewis actually, I dont believe.
Of course he wasnt done and when questioned about whether he thought John Lewis Civil Right legacy was impressive, he said:
I cant say one way or the other. I find a lot of people impressive. I find many people not impressive. But no, he didnt come to my inauguration. He didnt come to my State of the Union speeches, and thats OK. Thats his right. And, again, nobody has done more for Black Americans than I have. He shouldve come. I think he made a big mistake. I think he shouldve come.
When he was reminded of the decades of John Lewis Civil Rights work, Trump nonchalantly said, But there were many others also.
We honestly have no words.
