Filmmaker George Lucas is well known for being the man behind many great films but now he can add philanthropist to his resume after he made a huge donation to his alma mater!
It was reported that the filmmaker donated $10 million to Blacks and Latinos studying at the University Of Southern California.
Lucas and his wife Mellody will join in on the $10 million grant known as the ‘George Lucas Family Foundation.’ Starting next fall, the grant will be given to newly enrolled Blacks and Latinos at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.
“Hispanic and African-American storytellers are underrepresented in the entertainment industry, Lucas said.“It is Mellody’s and my privilege to provide this assistance to qualified students who want to contribute their unique experience and talent to telling their stories.”
The foundation will cater to both females and males completing their undergraduate and graduate degree. With that being said, Lucas will help fund male students who are qualified and his wife, Mellody Hobson will support the women who deserve such funding.
Lucas has been an active supporter as an alumni for USC as this isn’t his first go-round of helping with funding for the university. In the past he has helped build the USC platform back in 2006 by donating $175,000 million according to Vulture.
“We are so grateful to George and Mellody for their continued support and in particular for this amazing gift, and their recognition of the need to encourage the Hispanic and African-American storytellers of tomorrow,” Dean Elizabeth M. Daley of USC said.
Lucas is also doing big things this year by dropping his fans long anticipated film Star Wars: ’The Force Awakens! It’s good to hear people with talent and wealth care for the ones who may someday want to fill the same shoes as Lucas.
Episode VII of Star Wars: ’The Force Awakens’ will soon be in theaters on December 14, 2015.
