Thats right, 18-year-old #DaneGillespie became an overnight billionaire due to a banking error, according to #MirrorUK. He initially cashed a check for $8,900 from his grandma into his bank account. Instead, he got $8.9 milli!
We couldnt believe it, his mother Caroline told the #BelfastLive. My son thought he was a millionaire for a few hours. There was 8.9million in his account on Wednesday morning. Its as well he told us and didnt go and blow it all. Hes only 18.
Thats right, ma dukes stopped him from spending the bag and it sounded like he had his eyes on a Porsche, even though it was his mom who reminded him to cash that check from his grandma in the first place.
Next minute my husband messaged me with the photograph of his bank account details. It took me a wee while to click…Hes going to me, Im gonna order a Porsche and I said, dont be daft, thats not our money, we need to get this sorted’.”
The bank noticed the mistake a few hours later and issued a correction.
It was like that for a good few hours. For an 18-year-old being a millionaire for the day, he just cant believe it, his mom said. He just wanted to go out and spend, but if you do then you have to pay it back.
Nationwide, the teens bank, had not publicly commented on the mistake.
