The cheerleaders reppin’ Texas Southern University (TSU) recently made history as the first-ever HBCU-goers to win the National Cheerleading Association’s (NCA) College National Championship!

TSU Cheerleaders Commemorate Their Historic Win Online: ‘The Champs Are Here!’

Last week, the team came out on top at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida.

This marks the first time an HBCU has won the title since the NCA was established 75 years ago. As such, the team was sure to commemorate the “historic event” on Instagram.

The institution acknowledged the accomplishment in a statement. Dr. Kevin Granger — the school’s VP of Intercollegiate Athletics — declared that the team “worked very hard for this moment.”

“Words can’t express how proud I am for our cheer team’s national championship. They’ve worked very hard for this moment over the past several months. To see the long hours they’ve dedicated come to fruition in the form of a national championship is amazing as I want to commend the coaching staff and team members for their efforts.”

Granger wrapped by declaring, “This team has made history at Texas Southern, and everyone [in] TSU nation is proud of their accomplishments.”

As for head coach Shontrese Comeaux, she says that she always knew the team would make it to the championship.

“When I first came to TSU, I told the team we’re going to Nationals. When we earned our gold bid at NCA Camp, I told the team, ‘It’s time to go to work.’ I knew this was the year and the team to get the job done.”

Even with this significant accomplishment under the team’s belt, Comeaux notes that this is only the beginning, and she’s excited to see “where [they are] going to take the cheer program next.”

You can peep the award-winning performance down below.

The Team Details How They Prepared For The NCA Championship

On Friday, a few members of the TSU cheer squad appeared on Majic 102.1 for an interview.

When asked about their history-making accomplishment, the team started by acknowledging, “It feels great being the first HBCU to win this national championship.”

As far as how the cheerleaders geared up for the NCA College National Championship, it was noted that they began practicing six months ahead of time and implemented late-night practice sessions.

In other words, they’re making it clear that the team put in work!

“We had late-night practices in our gym… We practiced six months out. We kind of changed everything.”
