<p>Roommates, we&#8217;ve received an exclusive statement from The Black Music Collective at the Recording Academy addressing the representation of black artists for the 2020 GRAMMY nominations.</p>
<p>The statement reads that &#8220;black music is not a monolith&#8221; and they add that it&#8217;s a historic year for GRAMMY nominations.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a historic year as 10 black women are nominated in the top four categories and more than 20 black nominees are represented in the general fields,&#8221; the statement reads. &#8220;Also, for the first time, all 6 nominees for Best Rap Album are black independent artists. This is progress.&#8221;</p>

<p>As we previously reported, a lot of artists are not here for this year&#8217;s GRAMMY nominations as they feel as though there is a lack of representation for black artists.</p>
<p>Earlier today, Drake shared his piece on the GRAMMYs and award shows in general.</p>

<p>The Weeknd shared that he&#8217;d been collaborating with the GRAMMYs for a <a href="https://dev.theshaderoom.com/the-weeknd-says-he-was-planning-a-performance-for-the-grammys-prior-to-learning-he-was-not-nominated/"><strong>possible performance</strong></a>&#8211;but was still left out of the nominations. Many people feel as though The Weeknd deserved to be nominated, and was snubbed this time around.</p>
