Social Media Reacts To Tinashe’s Comments On Colorism

Singer Tinashe is currently trending on social media, and if you’re wondering why, it has everything to do with her recent interview with The Guardian.

The songstress sat down to talk about how are things are going in her career, and why she feels like she hasn’t reached a certain level of success as of yet.

At the start of the interview, she honestly admitted, “Things haven’t always gone according to my original plan, but that’s life, and things change.” Although things haven’t always gone to her plan, she has no plans on stopping anytime soon.

The topic of being a woman in the music industry came about where Tinashe said, “There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna. It’s very, very strange.”

Ciara was another artist that was mentioned as someone who has experienced the same struggle as Tinashe. She said, “It felt like they almost had to sacrifice someone because there wasn’t enough room, which isn’t true. Ciara’s an amazing artist, Beyoncé’s an amazing artist, Rihanna’s an amazing artist, and they’re all very different!”

However, the backlash stemmed from Tinashe’s comments on colorism, as her mixed background has been identified as one of the factors that have made her different.

Tinashe said, “There’s colourism involved in the black community, which is very apparent. It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes.” A shrug. “I am what I am.”

Her comments caused mixed reviews on social media, as some people defended her as an artist, while others said colorism has no indication on who she is as an artist, it’s simply just her work.

When it comes to her long awaited album “Joyride,” she said,“I plan on doing a solid few more months recording then hopefully getting it out this year. It’s going to be great, they’re going to be the best songs!”
