Social Media Reacts To Tinashe’s Comments On Colorism

Singer Tinashe is currently trending on social media, and if youre wondering why, it has everything to do with her recent interview with The Guardian.

The songstress sat down to talk about how are things are going in her career, and why she feels like she hasnt reached a certain level of success as of yet.

At the start of the interview, she honestly admitted, Things havent always gone according to my original plan, but thats life, and things change. Although things havent always gone to her plan, she has no plans on stopping anytime soon.

The topic of being a woman in the music industry came about where Tinashe said, There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if youre a black woman, youre either Beyonc or Rihanna. Its very, very strange.

Ciara was another artist that was mentioned as someone who has experienced the same struggle as Tinashe. She said, It felt like they almost had to sacrifice someone because there wasnt enough room, which isnt true. Ciaras an amazing artist, Beyoncs an amazing artist, Rihannas an amazing artist, and theyre all very different!

However, the backlash stemmed from Tinashes comments on colorism, as her mixed background has been identified as one of the factors that have made her different.

Tinashe said, Theres colourism involved in the black community, which is very apparent. Its about trying to find a balance where Im a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I dont fully fit into the black community; they dont fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes. A shrug. I am what I am.

Her comments caused mixed reviews on social media, as some people defended her as an artist, while others said colorism has no indication on who she is as an artist, its simply just her work.

When it comes to her long awaited album “Joyride,” she said,I plan on doing a solid few more months recording then hopefully getting it out this year. Its going to be great, theyre going to be the best songs!
