As many celebrities celebrate the life of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Usher shared that he spent his day in Selma, Alabama. Usher shared on his Instagram page that he was at the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge where “Bloody Sunday” occurred in 1965.

Usher shared a photo at the bridge with the caption, “I decided to celebrate this day by visiting this historical site, where brave men and women protested for the change we see today. It’s an honor to be walking in your footsteps here in Selma, Alabama. #PettusBridge #MLKDay #civilrights #roadtrip.”

He also shared a video on his story at the gravesite honoring some of the men and women who marched over the bridge. In the video with Stevie Wonder’s “They won’t go when I go” in the background, he captioned the video, “In the end, we will remember not the works of our enemies, but the silence of our friends,” which is a quote by MLK.

Many Roommates commended Usher for making the trip to Selma. One wrote, “That Stevie Wonder song hits me in the chest whenever I hear it.” Another one commented on the post reflecting on the current state of the world. They wrote, “Imagine all the people that protested and even lost their lives in the process to see that not a lot has changed today and Black people are still getting killed, harassed, and discriminated against.”

The significance of the events that occurred on “Bloody Sunday” is similar to the fight Black people are still fighting today. There is no difference between the 600 people who crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in an attempt to begin the Selma to Montgomery march peacefully. Those men and women were attacked by state troopers, which is identical to Black Lives Matter protestors who continuously get arrested at peaceful protests.

Hopefully, the vision Dr. King made those many years ago continues to make progress in 2021 and the years looking forward.
