USPS Warns 40 States That They May Miss Mail-In Ballot Deadlines Raising Concerns About Potential Ballots Not Being Accounted For

While mail-in-ballots are usually a convenient way to cast your vote during an election, it appears that this option may not be a viable one during the 2020 presidential election.

According to The Hill, the U.S. Postal Service warned 40 states of “inconsistencies” between delivery service and state deadlines for receiving and counting mail-in ballots. This raises concerns about ballots not arriving in time to be accounted for.

“The letters advised election officials to be mindful of the potential inconsistencies between the Postal Service’s delivery standards, which have been in place for a number of years and have not changed, and the provisions of state law,” Martha Johnson, a spokesperson for the Postal Service, said in a statement.

The letter was sent to states with the purpose of educating voters on when to complete return their ballot.

“The purpose of the letters was to assist states in educating their voters on when to request their ballots and to return their completed ballots in accordance with the Postal Service’s mailing standards.”

Also, battleground states such as Florida and Michigan received this letter, and six other states, and D.C. were reportedly told that possible delays could impact smaller subsets of voters, according to The Hill.

Mail-in ballots are at the forefront of conversation right now. It’s no secret that Trump has blocked funding for the USPS during the pandemic.

Recently, in an interview with Fox Business Network, Trump stated he elaborated even more about not funding the USPS. He stated,

“They want $25 billion — billion — for the post office. Now they need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump said.

“Now, in the meantime, they aren’t getting there. By the way, those are just two items. But if they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting … because they’re not equipped.”

As you know, presidential nominee Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his vice-president running mate.

This election definitely seems to be one that gets more interesting by the day.
