New Lab Tests Reveal 900 Toxic Chemicals Found In Human Hair Extensions From Top Brands | TSR Investigates

Synthetic braiding hair and human hair extensions tested positive for lead, carcinogens, and toxic chemicals. In this TSR Investigates exclusive, we break down new findings from Consumer Reports and Silent Spring Institute. Last year, Consumer Reports found dangerous chemicals in popular synthetic braiding hair. Now, new testing expands the scope — including products marketed as 100% human or plant-based. Researchers detected lead in 29 of 30 hair extension products tested. All samples contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and dozens of chemicals appeared on major hazard lists, including California’s Prop 65 list. Dr. James Rogers of Consumer Reports says one human hair product contained the highest levels of lead detected. Meanwhile, Philadelphia-based Dosso Beauty was the only brand in testing with no heavy metals detected. Dr. Elissia Franklin of Silent Spring Institute also found more than 900 detectable chemicals in hair extension samples in a study published with the American Chemical Society. What does this mean for consumers? Are these products regulated? And could new state laws change manufacturing standards nationwide?
