Roommates, as we continue on with the 2021 awards season, the NAACP Awards proved that they are always about celebrating #BlackExcellence in various areas—and several of our Hollywood faves received major honors. Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman and Issa Rae were just some of the big winners at the 52nd annual NAACP Image Awards, celebrating their accomplishments in television and film.

This year’s NAACP Image Awards started off with a bang, as President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris opened the show with remarks about the Black community’s role in the historic 2020 presidential election. Host Anthony Anderson stepped into his familiar role as host, announcing the first award of the night, which went to “Bridgerton” star Regé-Jean Page, for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series.

Viola Davis practically swept the awards, as she took home two trophies, the first was for her long-running role as Annalise Keating on the ABC drama “How To Get Away With Murder,” for which she received an award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series. Her second honor was for her performance in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” where she won for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Motion Picture.

As expected, the late, great Chadwick Boseman received the NAACP Image Award for his moving performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which was sadly his very last film. His wife accepted the award on his behalf with a moving speech encouraging the Black community to take their health seriously.

Meanwhile, Issa Rae broke Tracee Ellis Ross’s long winning streak, as she took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series. There were also a few musical performances, courtesy of Jazmine Sullivan and Maxwell.

Eddie Murphy received the Hall Of Fame Award for his legendary career, while “Bad Boys For Life” was awarded as Outstanding Motion Picture.

It was inspiring to see so much #BlackExcellence on display!
