Walmart Apologizes For “Back To School” Campaign Featuring Guns

Walmart has apologized for a back to school campaign featuring guns. There was banner situated atop of a gun display which read: “Own the school year like a hero” and it understandably disturbed and confused shoppers. The incident occurred in Evansville, Ind. and has been taken down.

Considering how sensitive gun dialogue is in the U.S. due to unbalanced support for certain gun laws, unlawful slayings by police and an increase in school shootings, consumers demanded answers.

“We are investigating this situation and deeply regret that this image has been circulated as it doesn’t represent our company values,” Walmart tweeted upon learning of the photo. They tweeted to another Twitter user that “This REALLY isn’t acceptable,” and that “The sign’s gone and we’re looking into how this could have happened.”

It is unclear whether an employee created the display or a customer manipulated it, however, Charles Crowson, a spokesman for Walmart, sent a statement to the Washington Post where he reinforced that there would be an investigation. “What’s seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores,” he said. “We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened.”
