Nellie’s Sports Bar has issued a statement after protests broke out in front of the establishment over the weekend, Roomies. The D.C. club was packed with customers on Saturday night when an unfortunate turn of events happened. Video footage has surfaced showing bar security dragging a young woman down the stairs of the bar, and management claims they will be opening a full investigation into the incident.
According to WUSA9, 22-year-old Keisha Young is the woman seen being forcefully removed from the bar, and she claims it was a case of mistaken identity. Keisha explains security was looking for another someone else who allegedly attempted to bring a bottle of alcohol into the bar and she happened to be “caught up” in the altercation.
After footage of the incident and the subsequent protests went viral, Nellies released a statement on Instagram, saying the situation was upsetting and disturbing to see.
“We were incredibly upset and disturbed to see the unfortunate event that took place at Nellie’s last night,” the post read. “We are undergoing a full investigation of the situation. At Nellie’s we foster an inclusive and safe environment, so events like this are completely unacceptable to us.”
The unsettling video shows men coming to Keisha’s aid shortly after security gets her down the stairs. The very next day, crowds began to gather outside of Nellie’s calling for the bar to be shut down.
