It seems that people don’t really take the “think before you speak” advice into much consideration until they slip up and are facing their consequence.
So maybe Adam Satterly had thought about calling his Judge a “punk ass n—–” prior to his outburst; and maybe he’s a victim of complacent communication, but regardless of his choice in thought process, he most definitely was facing major consequence –60 days behind bars! ;
According to Complex, Judge Olu Stevens had just dismissed a hearing involving Satterly. The Judge reportedly revoked Satterly’s bond on several methamphetamine charges. Upset, Satterly shouted, “punk ass n—–.” ;
Keep this detail in mind: Satterly is a white man and Judge Stevens is black. ;
So anyways the Judge summoned Satterly back into his court room to address his comment but apparently it was ‘say anything hour’ in the room because Satterly tried to tell the judge that he wasn’t referencing him. Instead, he was “talking at his brother,” who is also white. ;
Ummmm…. Ok. ;
“No, no, no, I didn’t mean it like that,” Satterly told the judge. ;
Judge Stevens wasn’t for the excuses. Satterly gon’ learn today! Judge Stevens didn’t buy his excuses and slapped him with a 60 day jail sentence in consequence of his racial slur. ;
“Well I’ll tell you what. I’m going to hold you in contempt of court for having said that,” the judge said. “You don’t speak those words in here. And that word particularly, you don’t use that word. I’m going to give you 60 days for having used that word.” ;
A day after Jefferson Circuit Juge Olu Stevens sentenced a defendant to 60 days in jail for contempt, for shouting a racial slur as he was being taken into custody, Stevens reduced the sentence to one day when the defendant apologized.
The Courier-Journal confirmed that Judge Stevens did half way renege on his sentence–he reduced it to one day as opposed to 60. He also had the court records no longer reflect the sentence. ;
This might be added to the list of things Judge Stevens has been reprimanded for. Over the course of the last few months, he has received some ear-beatings for speaking out about Black defendants having all-White juries in a city that’s 25% black and for feeling offended by victims of a robbery claiming their child is now “terrified” of ALL black men. ;
Oh what a time to be alive! ;
How are y’all feeling about the judge reducing Satterly’s sentence from 60 days to only one?! Let’s chat below! ;
