Roommates, Whoopi Goldberg is a legend in every sense of the word whose career spans decades—and she recently took a trip down memory lane to look back at her historical accomplishments. Covering the latest issue of ‘Variety’ magazine, Whoopi Goldberg reflected on being the only Black female EGOT winner and the 30th anniversary of her landmark Oscar win in 1991.

Back in March of 1991, Whoopi Goldberg made history as the first Black woman to win an Academy Award in 50 years for her role as Oda Mae Brown in the blockbuster film “Ghost.” It was her second nomination, as six years earlier she was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Celie in “The Color Purple,” however she lost. In the latest issue of ‘Variety,’ Whoopi looked back on that historical night and shared some of her feelings from the turning point in her career.

“I didn’t want to jinx it. I just thought, ‘You’ve got to go in this without any expectations, and whatever happens, happens,” she said of her win. She also revealed why her mother wasn’t in attendance for her big night. “My mom did not want to come because she felt that she came to the first one and didn’t want me to see her looking disappointed or upset. And then I won, and it was like, ‘Of course, the day you don’t come.’”

Whoopi also took time out to discuss her monumental feat as still the only Black woman to be an EGOT winner, meaning she has won all of the major entertainment industry awards—Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. She revealed that her guest spot on a 2009 episode of “30 Rock” was the first time she was aware of the title.

As for what’s up next for Whoopi, she is starring in the recently announced “Sister Act 3” coming to Disney Plus, produced by herself and Tyler Perry—and she is producing “The Emmett Till Story” and preparing to return as Guinan on “Star Trek: Picard.”
