ASAP Rocky Addresses His Past Comments About Black Lives Matter

There is no doubt that ASAP Rocky definitely had a difficult time last year when he spent some time behind bars while out in Sweden. As many people advocated for him to be released so he could return back to the U.S. There were some people who held his past comments against him in a time of need.

During his recent interview with Kerwin Frost, he talked about his time in jail while he was in Sweden, and he also revisited some comments he made concerning black lives matter a few years back, and the meaning it had today. He said, “I thought I addressed that in the past and to be in jail hearing people still trying to stir up some weird sh*t.”

ASAP continued, “What I will say though is in those old interviews I used to say ‘I think it’s inappropriate for me to rap about things I didn’t help with. I felt like when it came to Ferguson, J. Cole went down there and he actually was on the news and he helped. I felt like he deserved to rap about it. So when someone asks me that in 2015 I’m like: ‘I just feel, personally, if I’m in SoHo or I’m here I can’t even talk on that’… That’s appropriating. … It’s not sincere. It’s pretentious.”

He continued to keep his stance on his past comments but added, “The only part that I was wrong at was that, when in my case, there were people that never been to Sweden, there’s people that never been to Harlem. There’s people that don’t know ASAP Rocky, but was still sympathetic to my situation and still had empathy and could understand, and was vocal, and helped my situation.”

For those who are not familiar with what ASAP said back in 2015, during an interview with Time Out New York, he said, “Why would I feel compelled to rap about Ferguson? I’m not about to say that I was down there throwing rocks at motherfuckers, getting pepper-sprayed. I’d be lying. Is it because I’m black? What the fuck, am I Al Sharpton now? I’m A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my motherfuckin’ lean, my best friend dying, girls, my jiggy fashion and my inspirations in drugs. I live in fucking Soho and Beverly Hills. I can’t relate.”

Check out his full interview below, and he addresses his past comments at the 52:00 min mark.
