Virgil Abloh Raises $1 Million For A Fashion Scholarship Benefiting Black Students

Recently Virgil Abloh has faced some backlash when it came to the amount of money, he showed on social media to help bail out Black Lives Matter protesters. He then faced criticism again when it came to his creative eye. He’s now looking past all of that and helping out the next black creative.

He took to social media to announce that he raised $1 million to support scholarships for Black students through his “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund.

He said, “Anyone that’s ever been in a meeting with me or a creative brainstorm or even a random iMessage chat knows that I’m forever fighting for the “17-year-old-version” of myself. What that specifically means is… all I want is for any young black kid to achieve a shorter path to their career goals, and if I can help with an open-source approach to opening doors or messaging “how-i-did-it” along the whole way, then I’ve done my real job, not my actual job.⁣”

According to Complex, prior to his social media post, Virgil said in a formal statement, “I’ve always been passionate about giving the next generation of students the same foundation for success that was given to me. That’s why I’m excited to launch this Fund in partnership with the FSF, which has an outstanding track record of helping college students achieve successful careers.”

As we previously reported, Virgil faced some backlash back in June when he showed social media the $50 donation he made to help bail out protesters. At the time he said that he was “matching the local energy,” as he tagged others. Later he clarified that the $50 was not the final amount he donated.

Nonetheless, that led to his name “Virgil” being referenced to the number 50.

Later in the month, he faced backlash again for his design of Pop Smoke‘s debut album. Ultimately, the album cover was changed by the time the album was dropped.
